Digital Art: Photography
With the progression of optics in cameras, it is becoming increasingly more accessible to use photography in the Visual Arts classroom. With this progression, this means that students do not need to have extensive knowledge of fundamentals of photography such as ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed, and can instead focus on composition, elements and principles of design.
FundamentalsThe teacher can choose to do a photography unit, where students learn the fundamentals of photography and using Manual mode on their cameras to enhance their photography skills. This is dependent on the curriculum and timelines laid out by the teacher. This can lead to students creating final photographic pieces, collages and more.

CompositionIf there simply is not enough time to delve deeper into photography, it is a possibility to cover composition, colour, leading lines, and other elements and principles of design. These pictures can be used and changed on software such as Photoshop or can be used to create a traditional piece of art such as a drawing or painting. Photography is also helpful in screen printing.

PortfolioShould the fundamentals be covered in class, a portfolio can be marked as a piece of artwork as well. Students can do online portfolios with their photos or have them printed off and create a booklet, the possibilities are endless. If students have learned the fundamentals, you can have them include the settings they used to shoot their works of art and give them a mark for K/U, T/I, C and A.

PossibilitiesKnowing photography opens up many doors for students. This allows for various types of learners to shine in their own way, and provides diversity so that all projects are not heavily skill based. The knowledge of photography also opens up many career paths for students, and should be allowed in the visual arts classroom as a medium.
